Aminder Dhaliwal’s new graphic novel A Witch’s Guide to Burning uses an inventive combination of prose and illustration to transform the grim notion of burning witches at the stake into an epic quest in a fantasy world marked by magic, demons, and a search for lost memories. In the imaginary world of Chamomile Valley, witches perform magical services for their communities, but risk burning at the stake when they don’t keep up with the demand for new magic. Once burned, rejected witches lose their magic—as well as their memories. In this six page excerpt, a young witch named Singe wakes up after her burning was interrupted by rain, and is revived by an unlikely duo—a charming witch doctor named Yew-Vada and Bufo Wonder, a witch that mistakenly turned himself into a frog—that nurse her back to health while they flee the demons the burnings unleashed. A Witch’s Guide to Burning by Aminder Dhaliwal will be released this month by Drawn & Quarterly.
